Catcher training drills:


  • Lead with glove to smother/block
  • Reaction time: duck walk up to 4 balls
  • Good form keeps you from getting hit in non-padded areas

Improve pop up time:

  • The exchange: catch the ball deep to your body; move feet with transfer, feet and elbow point to target - keep it short and quick!!!
  • To improve arm strength - long toss, band work, weighted balls

One knee down technique:

  • Cover wide not narrow
  • Switch legs - right knee down for pitches breaking that way
  • Target - then lower glove and bring up

Catcher warm up drills:

  • Balance - balancing disc? Rapid fire; different balls

Tee Ball Drills:

  • Keep it fun and keep it safe
  • Defend the castle - ground balls



Indoor drills:

  • Whiffle ball batting practice



Fielding Drill:

4 Outfield Catch (and Throw) Drill (3-4 players): - place pylons zig-zag gradually increasing distance

Catch #1 - player catches a ball moving to their right towards pylon #1; plant foot and throw ball back and run to next pylon. 

Catch #2 - big pop fly moving to their left yelling ‘I GOT IT’ (only when the ball is on the way down); throw the ball back and run to next pylon. 

Catch #3 catch a throw (line drive ish) near the pylon; plant foot and throw ball back and run towards last pylon. 

Catch #4 is a dive to make the grab.  Get up and throw in to coach.

This is a confidence drill so start out easy and make more difficult based on player’s speed/ability.  Have players stay at the end and do over again in the opposite direction
